Learning Outcome 3

Students who complete English 110 should:

Employ techniques of active reading, critical reading, and informal reading response for inquiry, learning, and thinking.

For project one, I made the annotation, “Connecting the text to world: many individuals who get bullied for their name like Nguyen or prefer to use a different name get a lot of negative comments including home for the reasoning that your birth name was given to you so most parents believe that it should be something to be proud of- not disrespected.”

As you can see I saw a connection with the text to world. It makes me sad, how individuals have to deal with bullying and when they have enough, sometimes they have to fight their families. This idea was not necessarily in my paper, but the overall aspect of getting bullied was there. This also shows how parents really do care for the name they give you and why some parents find it disrespectful to change that name. It’s hard when you are the one being bullied for that given name and some parents cannot see that which also makes this a challenge.

For paper two, I annotated the scientific article here and realized how it is a challenge for honor students to use intellectual humility due to how much knowledge they have. I used this in my paper and argued against it with Jamison and how with her intelligence, she still successfully uses intellectual humility. The annotation itself is a challenge though when specifically looking at what the scientific article is saying here and that is important to acknowledge. Going down throughout this outcome, you will see all of my annotations throughout paper one, two, and three, including the annotations from the beginning of the semester.

My abilities as an active and critical reader is shown throughout my annotations, as I point out challenges, connections, and extending on the ideas the author’s are expressing. I also bring out my own feelings and opinions throughout the text when I annotate while remembering to add what I think the author is trying to say/express. I think its helpful to annotate and comment on what your reading to fully comprehend what you are reading about and remember strong ideas or connections you find throughout the text. I think annotating overall is useful because it really does help you remember more on what you are reading about and makes it so when you are discussing, you are more involved, while also wanting to discuss what you have read because annotating really makes you think! I tend to relate to what I am annotating and I still really prefer to highlight, but I have learned the importance in commenting on what is being highlighted. In my annotations for “Why Storytelling Is Part Of Being a Good Doctor” by Jerome Groopman, I mentioned how certain sentences in his article “speaks to me- no one realizes how consuming being a doctor/healthcare worker is and the unhealthy habits that are formed with such a high workload.” I think this is an important annotation because not only did it speak to me, but what was being quoted showed the difficulties one can go through working in the medical field. Overall, annotating is really important to be an active and critical reader and it pushes you to really indulge into what is being read and not only analyze the text, but find important connections and other important context.
